Ethics are of the characteristics of Islamic civilization

Ethics are of the characteristics of Islamic civilization

Introduction

Ethics are the protective fence of Islamic civilization. They are the base on which the Islamic civilization was established. The principles of ethics and values are involved in all systems and aspects, whether in personal, social, political or economic conduct. The Prophet of Islam (peace be upon him) came to perfect ethics. He (peace be upon him) said: "I was sent to perfect good morals." [1] By these words, the Prophet (peace be upon him) identified the purpose of his mission and how he wanted to perfect morals in the hearts of his nation and all people. He wanted all humans to deal with each other as per the law of good manners which is above all laws.

In ruling, science, legislation, war, peace, economy, family and others, the Islamic civilization took into account ethical principles in terms of legislation and application. Ethics in Islamic civilization reached a great level that no ancient or modern civilization could reach. In this regard, the Islamic civilization had admirable effects that made it the only civilization ensuring pure happiness for humans with no misery[2].

Source of ethics in Islamic civilization

The most important thing in this issue is that revelation was the source of morality in the Islamic civilization. Therefore, ethics are fixed values and ideals that serve every person, regardless of race, time, location and sex, unlike the source of theoretical ethics, namely the limited human mind, or the so-called customs. So, theoretical ethics vary from one society to another and from one thinker to another.

The source of obligation in Islamic ethics is one's feeling that Allah (be He Exalted) watches him. The source of obligation in theoretical ethics is the pure conscience or the sense of duty or binding laws. This ethical character is a safety valve that ensures the continuity and permanence of civilization and at the same time prevents it from deviation and stumbling.

Humanity in Islamic civilization

One of the most prominent ethical characters of the Islamic civilization is its humanity. Man is the cornerstone and pillar of the Islamic civilization, which is keen to preserve the dignity and interests of humans, on the ground that they are entitled to reconstruct the world and make civilization. The noble Qur'an has assurances emphasizing human dignity and preference. Allah (be He Exalted) says: {We have honored the sons of Adam; provided them with transport on land and sea; given them for sustenance things good and pure; and conferred on them special favors, above a great part of our creation.} [Al-Isra': 70]

Allah has granted dignity for all human beings alike. The human essence has been one since Allah created it. The difference between human beings does not change their essence, as all people were created from one origin. Allah has distinguished man from among other creatures with that dignity. This dignity has different dimensions. It is a divine protection of man, involving respect for his mind, freedom and will, and also involving his right to security of himself, his wealth and descendants.

Conclusion

With these characteristics, the Islamic civilization has unique features. It is universal and based on absolute oneness of Allah, the Lord of the worlds. It is characterized by balance and moderation. It is also characterized by ethical characters. Therefore, it is not a national or racist culture, nor is it against human nature.

These unique characteristics of Islamic civilization stem the quality of permanence and continuity from the principles of the Islamic religion. Thus, these characteristics are like precious stones which do not change even if circumstances changed or developed.

[1]Narrated by Al-Hakim on the authority of Abu-Hurayrah: Chapter of the history of ancient prophets and messengers, and chapter of signs of Allah's Messenger, namely the signs of prophecy (4221). He said: correct on condition of Muslim, but they did not narrate it. Both Al-Zahabi and Al-Bayhaqi (in Al-Sunan Al-Kubra, 20571) agreed with him. Al-Albani said: correct, see: Al-Silsilah Al-Sahihah (45).
